Some words on the ANIMALS session by Jim...
Animals
was the second album I engineered for Buck Gooter (the first being Woman
President, which we’d also recorded at “The Shed”
in February of ’07), so I felt pretty much at ease going into
the session. I knew Billy and Terry were real professionals; the recording
of Woman President had gone very smoothly because they’d practiced
the material and knew exactly how they wanted that album to sound and
I figured things would go even smoother this time. They didn’t
disappoint me. Once again, they had practiced all the songs beforehand
and I think just about every track on Animals is a first take. Billy
was more familiar with my recording rig and methods this time around
too and came up with several good ideas for some “special effects”
that we used to fancy up the sound here and there. Terry made some interesting
suggestions as well. I thought they had a lot of strong songs and, of
course, in the end it’s always about the song. I remember being
really happy for Billy and Terry while we recorded. I thought they had
a really good thing going...a unique, interesting, full sound made by
just two people. They loved what they were doing and they were doing
it well. Really carving out a distinct niche for themselves in the world,
I guess you might say. I think we wrapped the whole thing up in six
or seven hours. I reckon it took me longer to mix that album than it
did for them to record it! Pretty amazing when you think about it. I
thought it was their strongest record to date. It was pretty cool that
they did a Book Of Kills song, too. Afterwards I drove into town and
met my wife and some friends at a bar. I felt as though I’d just
come from a magic music land where things were definitely a lot cooler
than the “real” world I was now back in. I tried to tell
my friends about the strange place I’d been and how they themselves
might benefit from a trip or two there, but words failed me and I knew
they'd never understand anyway, so I just shut up and drank my Scotch.
Super special Animals recording session stills by CLC.
